In a journey that started over five months ago, New Jersey based stand-up comedian Tim Hayes was voted the winner of The Comedy Stop’s Search for New Talent Contest at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. The contest, which started in March and began with over 50 acts, was narrowed down through semi-final rounds until the finals on July 30, 2014.
The Comedy Stop has been an Atlantic City staple for over 30 years and puts on 8 comedy shows a week upstairs in the Tropicana. The winner will receive $1,000 and will do a week’s worth of performances as the middle act of a triple bill at the club.
There were many very funny acts performing at the finals, including Michelle Tomko, the only female comedian, and Lou Misiano, an upcoming comedian from Philadelphia who won first place in his semi-finals round.
The only act which was not a singular stand-up comedian were the comedy duo of McDonald and Carney, who performed their Two-Man improv act using audience members.
However, the night belonged to Tim Hayes, the Brick Township chiropractor by day and comedian at night. Tim cracked the audience up with his set describing his two children, his divorce, and his family life. He has been performing comedy about 7 years but has never won a contest of this magnitude. Tim has performed at many venues in New York and New Jersey such as Bananas in Hasbrouck Heights and Foxwoods in Connecticut, but he is hoping this victory and week-long residence at The Comedy Stop leads to even bigger and brighter things.
Tim had an interesting route to his current success. Tim started as an actor about 15 years ago and even performed on an episode of Law and Order: SVU. He was a SAG actor, but wanted to find his passion doing something closer to home for his children. Since Tim started performing stand-up comedy, his hard work and dedication have shown great results, as the crowd at The Comedy Stop can attest to!
